Blogger's Quilt Festival - Fall 2017 - Minions

Size: 54'' x 70''
"Minion's Minions Quilt"

This is my version of a fun QAL that was hosted on Fandom in Stitches a while ago.
I added few blocks I designed, and I set the blocks in a fun layout, to form a quilt on a quilt :)
The binding is a fun two colors binding, following Susan's tutorial
After washing it, the quilt is sooooo soft and scrunchy because I have high loft batting!!!

This is my second entry for the Blogger Quilt Festival!
My first entry is here.

If you are new around here, WELCOME!
If you have been around for a while, THANKS AND WELCOME BACK! :)

--
If you are new around here, let me just point you to my main addiction: designing and sharing for free tons of paper piecing patterns :)

As you can see from one of my old headers arrangement, I design patterns for Disney characters, Peanuts and Snoopy, Downton Abbey, Alice in Wonderland but I have many many more (Maleficent, The Simpsons, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Betty Boop, Minions and more)!! Some of them have to be tested, some of there are tested. You can find them just navigating the different tabs or just typing the character name in the search box at the top of the page.

--
The other thing I love is to host EVENTS for us quilters!
An event coming up on this blog: the Fall edition of my "Art with Fabric Blog Hop"!!

and a FREE QAL for 2018... it's not too early to sign up as I started sharing more information about it already!!

--
If you have any comment about my quilt, I would love to hear!!!
And check out more wonderful mini quilts over at blogger's quilt festival!!

    The Waste Lands

    --

Patty (elmstreetquilts) is hosting a fun event (Bag It) to encourage people to share any bag they make for chances to win great prizes and to inspire each other (Bag it, entry page)!!
I have few bag presents on my list for Xmas so I thought to start it early. And since I think we should also make presents for ourselves, I decided to make 2 Sew Together Bags.
I used some denim fabric from a recent Quilty Box...
Lesson learned: never use denim fabric for this kind of project :)

The denim is easy to sew... in one layer... in two layers... in three layers... but folding on folds on folds (which happens on the sides of this bag) it is pretty insane :)
What I learned, however, is that if I move manually the needle of my machine, I can stitch a huge pile of layers without breaking the needle! Maybe some stitches are skipped, but if the seamline goes on, it is all good for me!

I made one bag all denim, one half denim half normal cotton.
Both were challenging but fun in the end!! Now mine is full of my bullet journal supplies!! :)

    --

I completed four Xmas tree decorations. I will include these in Xmas cards that I send around so everyone will have a little handmade gift to keep. They are cross stitched with glow in the dark thread. And the little tab is a modafabric ribbon (the one wrapping bundles) :) I don't throw away anything here!! :)

    --

and FINALLY, I completed the quilting, added the binding (two colors binding, following Susan's tutorial). After washing it, the quilt is sooooo soft and scrunchy because I have high loft batting!!!
    --
Last, but not least, I was finally able to reveal my piece for the Art with Fabric Blog hop!
And the entire week, we had amazing artists sharing their pieces too!!

Check out the page of the event for links to each of these AMAZING quilts!!

It was a fantastic event, full of inspiration, tips, tricks, suggestions, and works of art that are very unconventional and unique.
While the presented pieces are exceptional, the running of the hop was not that smooth... it was stressful mainly because of the lack/delay in communication of many people that initially committed and then dropped out. I don't want to stress to much about it, and I learned few lessons that I will implement in the next event :)
But I wrote a "poem" to explain you all what went on behind the scenes :)
My English poetry is not that wonderful, but you may understand the message :)
Events are fictional... Numbers and timings are real :)

    "AND THEN THERE WERE FEW"
(inspired by "And then there were none" :) )

148 little emails went out to invite
quilters to share their arts delight

The message was sent out well in advance
five months to account for any circumstance

78 were under a silence spell
neither yes or no they were able to tell

... and then there were 70...

34 declined to join the event
to follow along they would be content

... and then there were 36...

A week full of posts I started to fill
counting on 6 artists each day sharing their skill

Biweekly reminders I kept sending out
and some people unfortunately had to drop out.
Some got captured by monsters at sea,
some had to climb a tall bean tree.
Others came to the rescue and joined instead
enthusiastic to share their skill with the thread.

... and then there were 29...

Now for each day artists are fewer
but 5 in each post will sure please a viewer!

Email reminders were sent closer together
and the schedule was made public altogether!
    Enthusiastic response from many viewers
who expected to admire art from fantastic sewers.

As deadlines approached we start losing more
some eaten up by a big crab on shore
another said "bye" and vanished in thin air
another had to go and feed a mean bear.

... and then there were 25...

The deadline was passed, and some were still mute
My emails became like a painful sore tooth!
With few explanation we lost more creators
maybe they got kidnapped by bad alligators!

... and then there were 20...

This is the final line up I brought,
at least is what I candidly thought!

2 more haven't spoken to me in while
and neither put up their post on time.

... and then there were 18...

Eighteen is a good number... if it wasn't the case
that I had days with very few people to praise.
I could have planned for a more balanced event.

This cute little poem is my kind way to vent :)

One more block for Selvage Splendid Sampler:

Due to the tinytinytiny size of these hexies (about 3/8 of an inch) I couldn't really use selvages. So I used batiks, as they really pop against the black background!
It was fun to learn a new technique to make hexies: Hexies from a circle!, no template and this is the only way to make it work with this so tiny size for me!

      --
I received my blocks from my other June's partner for the  Hello Block Swap.
Blocks that I received from Jane

I love how wonky and scrappy the entire quilt will look!!! I cannot wait to have more block to arrange in a nice design!!

      --
I got my American quilt (renamed "Tu vuo' fa' l'americano") from the Professional Long Arm Quilter (Marcia from Marcia's Crafty Sewing & Quilting). She did an AMAZING JOB with the quilting. I asked her an all over meander with stars, but she added some custom quilting which makes it suuuper special!!
      Size: 55'' x 72''
      "Tu vuo' fa' l'americano"
Center blocks from the Americana QAL, Snail trail border from the Block Swap Adventure!

      Amazing quilting, from the back!

This was my first experience with a long armer... I won a coupon for a discount so I thought it was a great opportunity to try it, especially on this quilt that is a Xmas present for my dad. I am extremely happy with the experience and final result. Xmas is far away, so I started using the quilt (perfect for the 4th of July, right?) ;)

      --
Two projects that are kind of the "spur of the moment"

My cat name is Pumpkin... I thought that the fabric was just too perfect not to use it for her little cat bed. I used the wrong material for the "foam filling" so the structure doesn't hold up that well... so I tried to hang it and see if Pumpkin likes it... if not I can put it on the floor. It's summer here, so I am not sure if she wants to sneak in there any time soon... but in the meantime it's nice to look at it I guess :)

A zipper pouch, GPS holder... because we got a new GPS and I wanted a cover that matches a previous credit card wallet I made for my boyfriend :)
      --
And last, but not least... the Minion QAL is over!
These are the last two blocks I made

And then... I assembled all the blocks in the final layout!
I am quilting the three sections separately and then joining them with a QAYG method. I will also add a special border... stay tuned to see that!
I actually already quilted 5 of the blocks (backgrounds) so I may be able to finish the quilt in a month or so (I have a trip for work, so I won't be able to quilt much in the next weeks)! I am very excited!!!

I am working on charity quilts to help the kids in the DC General Homeless Shelter.
I decided to make a matching pillow case for each quilt.
3 new hot dog pillow cases: tutorial by Jennifer @ sewhooked

The tutorial is sooooooooo easy and fast... that I couldn't stop to one pillow case per quilt... I am making some extras because they are so fun!
I have seen this tutorial and pillow cases a lot, but I've always thought: "well, it's just a pillow case, I have pillow cases so I don't need more"... well... I realized that store bought pillow cases are just boring and now I want to turn my entire stash into pillowcases for me!! :) :) I won't do it, but expect to see some fun Tula and other colorful pillow cases for me here in the next future! :) :)

I also embroidered four labels so that they are ready to be added to the quilts after quilting!! :)

      --
The other only thing I can share is another Minion

I also designed my final quilt. I will have some alternative blocks and a different overall design... stay tuned for more.

      --
And finally I received the two blocks from my Hello Block Swap partners (Amy and Audrey).
      Aren't they amazing?!?!?

I am working on charity quilts to help the kids in the DC General Homeless Shelter.
No progress this week... but I received a wonderful donation from Emily! A completed queen size (probably) quilt top! It is beautiful! Scrappy and colorful!
I will cut it up since the donations require smaller quilts, but basically it is another top (or two) that are pretty much ready to be assembled!!! :)

      --
I am participating to the fun Minion QAL over at Fandom in Stitches.

Each of these blocks takes me at least two weeks to complete: one week to cut the pieces and hunt in my stash for the perfect background fabric... 5 to 6 days to think "did I choose the right fabric? maybe I should try this other one, or may that other one"... and one day to put the block together :) they are extra fun!

Have you heard about Ello? It is basically Instagram without ads, no weird algorithm to show you only what they want you to see, no selling data, and it is for creative artists! :)

I never joined IG because I felt the goal was more about "showing off" than focusing on creativity, so even if I know there is a good quilting community there (which is creative and inspiring) I never felt it was the right place for me. Ello sounds much more fun!

It is a relatively new platform, so it has some issues (not too fast because it is still in beta but it's getting better, the signup is easy but if you don't pay attention the default groups that you are "following" may not be the ones you want, etc). If you want to join, it is free and there is a fast-growing quilting community. For helpful tips and finding your quilting tribe, you can read what the coordinator of the account @elloquilt says!

My handle is @alida-tweloq and to bring the community together I decided to coordinate a Block Swap!

You don't need to have an Ello account to join! Just fill this form http://goo.gl/forms/upr4FSDW6x to leave me your contact if you are interested. I am still collecting general info to see who is interested in what. I highly recommend to have an account, as I plan to post reminders, pictures of blocks, etc over there!
      --
      And last but not least...
I am back with some block for the Splendid Sampler!!

      Block 11, 20, 21
See all my blocks on My Splendid Journey page!

As usual, because of my use of two colors (black and selvages) I had to simplify a little bit the block.
Tracing embroidery designs on black fabric is a nightmare for me, and since I don't have fancy soluble things I used a very cheap method: tissue paper. Of course it is so fragile that it tears apart while I was stitching, but it holds up for the main part of the design, so I eyeballed all the other details!
I also simplified the framing around block 20 because it would have been too busy with the big triangle corners in the original design.
Last fun fact: by chance, the text in the candy on block 21 reads "Countdown to Christmas required"... is it a message from the universe? :) :)

A double horror story (and a link party)

I guess that I need to trust what others say... :)

      The Ongoing Project List:
      1. Play with Me QAL - April block has been released... it's technically free, so if you want to check it out and get back in the free QAL group, that's your chance!
      2. WGACA projects (changed projects)
        1. Charity Quilts for DC General Homeless Shelter project - no progress
        2. SECRET quilt for exhibit - (FDJ) 3 blocks done, 4th bocks with the double horror story (see below)
        3. Minion QAL - Hula Minion done (see below)
      3. Mirror Mirror Afghan - no progress
      4. Hello Block Swap - made my blocks (see below)
      5. American Quilt (previous known as Americana QAL) - waiting to hear from the quilter
      6. Splendid Sampler - preparing the next few embroidery blocks
      7. SECRET quilt 2 for exhibit - dropped (thinking about joining a different challenge instead)
      8. Road Home Row-A-Long - no progress
      The EverythingElse List:
      1. 70273 Project - waiting to hear about the blocks sent before making more

Let's start with the double horror story.

I am working on an exhibition quilt... I decided to use a jelly roll I received in a Quilty Box: black and white Kona Solid. I have heard that it frays a lot but while I was working on it I didn't really see that (I didn't have to manipulate the pieces too much).
Since the block has curves, I traced the lines with my washable crayola marker (black... the color that fades the best).
I pieced my block and then I used the Flatter spray (starch alternative) to press it flat...
HORROR 1: the black crayola marker start bleeding... but the terrifying part was that was bleeding blue!!! O_O ... I thought the block was ruined... then I took a deep breath and I thought: maybe if I soak it in cold water as usual everything will fade away.
I did that for several hours... when I went back to check, the water was colored and the block was clear... HORROR 1 recovered... only to discover HORROR 2: the fabric was suuuuper fraying!!! I've never seen anything like that! I have soaked tons of blocks: they shrink a little bit but never frayed so much! I lost between 1/4 and 1/2 inch around the entire block... and considering that it was 5 inches to begin with, you can understand why I cannot recover from HORROR 2 :( :( :( :(
I was very surprised because I didn't really move the block or anything... just static soaking made it happen!
Oh, well... I guess I have a nice label for the finished quilt piece :)

This is this month pattern: Go board (done with embroidery).

If you want details on how to get the pattern

We have about 50 people playing along, it is so fun!!

Curved log cabin, Drunkard's path and Quarter Dresden

I will link to short instruction files for these blocks soon! They are so fun and scrappy! I hope my partners will enjoy making them!!

I want to remind you that I am working on charity quilts,
and I would love your help!!
Quilts are for a quilt drive to help the kids in the DC General Homeless Shelter.
And you can help me by donating orphan blocks, partial blocks, or fabric (scraps, strips, leftover, uglies, whatever).
If you are willing to mail them to me, I could use them to make more quilts for these kids!!!
If you are up for a loving donation, please send me an email at tweloq[_at_]gmail[dot_com] or leave a comment here with your email address so I could give you my mailing address. I promise that your donation will be used to make some kids happy and feel more loved!!

No progress on this. But I have 2 or 3 quilt tops done... I just need to take them out of the box and get them quilted!

      A big show off! :)

About two months ago, I had a "sad" post where I was complaining about the fact that I didn't feel that my effort in putting together the pdf patterns, color them, share them, etc. was worth it...
because I was the only one actually sewing my patterns...
at least that's what I thought...
      But I was WRONG :)

Many of you reached out to me after that post and really cheered me up... and shared with me fabulous blocks that you made with my patterns!

So this is a "happy-dance" post that collects all the pictures that has been shared with me in the last couple of months (and one of the pattern is tested, fixed and released in its gigantic beauty ;) )

So without further ado, let's start this wonderful-blocks-parade!!

Betty Boop - pattern designed upon request, and pieced by Sarah

Snoopy & Woodstock - pieced by Jan (FB)

Sally, Linus and Lucy - pieced by Jaclyn (Pinterest, Craftsy)

SNOOPY QUILT - a complete QUILT featuring some snoopy fabric and my blocks, pieced by Tabitha

      The TowerThe crownThe future king
Archimedes on the hatThe Sugar PotArchimedes upside down
Sword in the Stone - Kysaundra is making another full "Sword in the Stone" quilt... using colors that are from the original movie... aren't those block gorgeous???

      and last (but not least)
Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland title, pieced by Raven

And thanks to Raven's comments and advice I fixed the pattern and now it is available in Quilt&Stitch-TestAlong.

And as a conclusive word, if you are thinking about testing one of my patterns (or the many more that other FiS designer have), join our new Facebook group.
