And last, but not least, I want to remind you that I am working on charity quilts,
and I would love your help!!
Quilts are for a quilt drive to help the kids in the DC General Homeless Shelter.
And you can help me by donating orphan blocks, partial blocks, or fabric (scraps, strips, leftover, uglies, whatever).
If you are willing to mail them to me, I could use them to make more quilts for these kids!!!
If you are up for a loving donation, please send me an email at tweloq[_at_]gmail[dot_com] or leave a comment here with your email address so I could give you my mailing address. I promise that your donation will be used to make some kids happy and feel more loved!!

I am happy to report that I received a great donation from Gigi!

Orphan blocks that are going to find their ways into future charity quilts!

And I already used some of last week donation: I cut some of the fabric in 10 inches square and tried another of Jean's block from a video tutorial!

After making those blocks I couldn't stop and I pieced together another top (the first toddler size)!

 about 40''x60''
(I know, the piece needs ironing ;) )

I really like using these big prints as they make a full quilt top come together super fast!!

I made another zipper pouch (birthday present). Isn't this cute? Perfect little pouch to feature cute fabric... and it's pretty easy too!!

I am happy to report that I received two wonderful donations from Diana and Kaelyn! Look at the amount of fabric/thread goodness that now I can use!! (and yes, my sewing helper tested the donation for comfort and coziness and I am happy to report that the donation received maximum marks and now I can go on and start planning my next quilts) :)

The panels/animal fabric donated from Cynthia already found their way in my third top:

(I know, the piece needs ironing ;) )

And I didn't get just that top done this week... I also quilted and bound the top I made a month ago!

Size: 41'' x 40''
Quilted with organic lines
(Organic = I know they should have been straight and they are not, but I don't care!!) ;)

The quilt needs to be washed but it's already super pouffy and snuggly, so I am very happy about the final result!!

Happy Halloween wall hanging. This is my project for "A Lovely Year of Finishes" (Sept).
Apparently I cannot spell (or count) as I realized that two letters were missing :) now I have all of them and a couple of extra blocks too.

Patterns by Jennifer @ Sewhooked

If I am not mistaken, now I miss two wizards and two cats and then I have all the blocks I need!
Let's see if I can have the top done for next week!

Jen (my partner for the Block Swap Adventure) requested a star in yellow/green batik and this is what I made for her
Picnic Pinwheel (by Patch & Chels)

I am not a big fan of batiks nor stars, but I think this block turned out pretty cute!!

Happy Halloween wall hanging. This is my project for "A Lovely Year of Finishes" (Sept).
I actually have all the "Happy Halloween" letters done. I need to pull out all the blocks and see how many I miss. But I want to get the top done by Sept so maybe this Halloween I will actually have it on my wall!! :)

This summer, I mentored a student and help her prepare and present her first poster! It was a fun and rewarding experience, and the last day I learned that she is a big fan of Harry Potter (and that she belongs to the Ravenclaw house). So, of course, I will make her a little mug rug as a memory of this experience! This is the first block.

Patterns by Jennifer, Harry Potter, Ravenclaw Crest

The main panel of the Geese project is assembled! Not much work here, but better than nothing ;)

I bought the geese panel on Etsy and I designed the panel on the right myself on Spoonflower. I really like the fact that I could use all kind of font, sizes, alignment, etc. I would not be able to make it so clean using embroidery... plus it would have taken me forever ;) So a fat quarter from Spoonflower is a little pricey, but for a small project like this it's worth it!

--
This is the Cross Stitch month for my Stretch Your Skills series, so I started my next biiig project... I want to still keep it a secret, but can you guess what it is? Color "palette" and first section partially done :)

These are the blocks for my August partner in the Block Swap Adventure.

--
And last, but not least, this is why I would love your help!!
I found out about this project, organized by Francel, to help the kids in the DC General Homeless Shelter.  You can find out more information about her quilt drive here.  The shelter has about 600 children there!!!  The current drive is looking for baby (40x40") and toddler (40x60") quilts and after that she will move to bigger quilts. After talking to her, I decided I could not NOT help!! :)

So I decided to make some quilts! As a start, I decided I will make 3 baby quilts, then few toddlers ones. And you can help me here!! Do you have some orphan blocks sitting in your sewing room for years? Or fabric that you bought and then you don't like any more? A strip in a jelly roll that didn't fit your project? A left over scrap that you don't know how to use? A couple of charm squares left from a project? An ugly fabric that was donated to you and you don't know how to use? Some HST that you cut the wrong size? If you are willing to mail them to me, I could use them to make more quilts for these kids!!! I have some material, but I don't have a big stash and you all know how much fabric is needed to make quilts ;) So, if you are up for a loving donation, please send me an email at tweloq[_at_]gmail[dot_com] or leave a comment here with your email address so I could give you my mailing address. I promise that your donation will be used to make some kids happy and feel more loved!!

This is the first quilt top I made

Size: about 40''x40''

This is my first quilt using jelly rolls, and it shows what I like and what I "don't like" about them.
- What I like: they are precut (so ready for strip piecing) and they create a nice variegated look without too much effort. I actually used strips from 3 rolls, because I am not a "fabric line" kind of girl. But it was very easy to get a coherent look for the Bargello part.
- What I "don't like": the variety of the pieces in the roll means that if you use up one strip and you don't quite cover the area you planned, you have to use another color to finish up! This is what happened with the border: I wanted to test the BasiX ruler that I got in my Quilty Box, and I really liked the zig zag effect. Unfortunately one set of strip was not quite enough to even go all the way on one side!! So I had to assemble the remaining scraps in "weird" ways to get enough fabric to cover the corner. It actually creates a very funky and modern look IMHO... it breaks the regularity of the border. So it all worked out for the best... but still, that's something to consider, if you want more coherence (and you are not following a pattern ;) ). Also the two solid borders don't have the "exact" color I was looking for, but they work anyway.

This was also my first time trying the Bargello technique! I started with a super basic design just to test the technique... it's very simple... super simple... actually so simple that is borderline boring for me :) luckily it was a small quilt... and my sewing assistant helped me keep it fun (tugging strips and rolling on the pieced ones :) )

SYS 2015 - Another month is almost over!!

At the beginning of June Kristel shared a cool tutorial for a fun Firefly-themed fabric postcard :).
You can find the tutorial on the SYS2015 page!

Where are YOUR postcards? Share them below!!

Remember that in this link party only projects belonging to the SYS2015 series should be added
(I reserve the right to delete any non compliant link).
This link party will be open all year long and you can add as many finished projects as you want!
The same link party will be shown on the SYS2015 page.
Each link will give you a chance to win one of the monthly prizes.

This month, in order to be eligible for prizes, you are asked to make a fabric postcard!
You are encourage to use Kristel quote from Serenity, but if that is "not your thing", any other quote or any other design from anywhere else will qualify as an entry!! As long as it's a finished fabric postcard!

You can still link up blocks and projects from the Foundation Paper Piecing, Quilting, Crochet and Pixel Quilt tutorials!!

This month prize is:

A bundle of little scraps! They are all kind of colors, shapes and cuts! They come from my stash and I have been using them for paper piecing so they have all weird shapes, but they are just perfect for small applique projects like the fabric postcard!

As an added incentive, I will add a new piece of scraps for each project added in the link party from July 1st to August 5th! So the more people link, the bigger the prize could get... no upper limit to the number of scraps in the prize... so get your projects together and link them below!!

I will draw a winner (using random.org) on August 5th between all the new entries in the link party.
International participants are welcome!!

Lost my mojo, but I stitch on (and a link party)

I am in one of those weeks... when none of your current project inspires you to sew so you have to find new projects to try ;)

A long time ago I was obsessed with selvages and I collected a big pile of them... and then I never had the chance to use them :)
So since I was looking to get my mojo back, I thought that the simple project of sewing selvages to a muslin piece for a couple of zipper pouches was the prefect activity!

Main pieces for mini sew together zipper pouches!
--
And another activity that does not require thinking, is to try to use up my overflowing bags of scraps!
Bonnie Hunter started a new  Leader and Ender project (with tumblers) and even if I don't do classic leader/enders (because with paper piecing it's just very impractical) I wanted to use this project as an excuse to "End" the madness in my overflowing bags of scraps ;)

Since they are divided by colors, I will make monochromatic scrappy blocks and put them together with some kind of sashing (still to decide). These are my first two blocks

10'' x 14'', scrappy tumbler blocks!

I see another scrappy rainbow project by the end of the year!! ;)

--
Last but not least... the winners for the flash SYS2015 giveaway are:
Barbara and Nicole! I already sent you an email!
I hope to get your contact info soon so Kristel will be able to send the prize to you asap!

Susan (quiltfabrication.blogspot.com) is hosting a fun Quilt Along (Spangled Stars)!!
Last week I finished the top, but I realized the piece of fabric I wanted to use for the back was just not wide enough :( So what did I do? I decided to use some of the blocks I received in my Block Swap Adventure swap and add them on the back! I picked the blocks that didn't fit too well with the others I have... nothing wrong with these blocks, but they are just not the right color or motif to play well with others... but they are great in a scrappy sampler pieced back, right?

--
Few more blocks for my D wall hanging! Blocks from the book "A Quilter's Ark". These are soooooo simple, that it takes me more time to pull the fabric from my stash than to assemble the blocks!

--
And last, but not least I am making Stan for my Memory quilt 2!
If you don't know who Stan is, you MUST check out this video

He is the most hilarious pixel character ever designed ;) I absolutely love how he keeps moving his arms and the plaid jacket is static!! :) :) old school animation!!

Anyway, I made it following Susan tutorial for the SYS series (with my own twists, as I didn't want to cut the 1050 squares, 1 inch unfinished, that compose the piece).

That is NOT a giant penny... those are tiny squares, 0.5 inches finished!!

I am very excited to see this block completed!!

Susan (quiltfabrication.blogspot.com) is hosting a fun Quilt Along (Spangled Stars)!!
I joined at the beginning of the moth and in about 10 days I assembled the entire quilt top! Kudos to me considering that I usually don't like these "assembly line, quick quilts designs"!! :)

But I absolutely love this design... the striking thing for me is that one block (the bar block) is the one that has more units in the entire quilt, but it is so simple that it "blends in" and it doesn't take over the design. But since it's so simple and fast, it makes the entire quilt very easy to make!!

So this is my quilt top

Water Lilies (68''x74'')
Yes, I didn't iron it yet... it's too big, I will iron it when the batting comes and I am ready to quilt it!

--
As I said, I went back on the cows :) and made another "cow face" block (resized to be 5'') and a couple of other animal blocks from the book "A Quilter's Ark". These are soooooo simple, that it takes me more time to pull the fabric from my stash than to assemble the blocks!

The tree is by Jennifer (Sewhooked), pattern called "Topsy-Turvy Trees".

--
The other project I worked on is my Mirror Mirror Afghan (using the tapestry crochet technique)

16''x22'' front and back

This is going to be the other half of my main central panel for the afghan! I really like the way it turned out! I already designed the next block, go me!!

Finally I made the block for Dagmar (for the Block Swap Adventure): she asked for a star block and she said scrappy is welcome. So making my "Water Lilies" quilt I ended up with extra HST and the other unit with triangles in... and when I googled for a star block pattern I found the one below that uses exactly the units I had! so this is the block I will send her (hope she likes it)

SYS 2015 - Three announcements

Last week Karen shared a fun tutorial for a small little amigurumi friend :).
You can find the tutorial on the SYS2015 page!

Announcement 1: My project is done!
Let me introduce you to Snowy! She is not a Pet Rock... she is the Pet Snowball of my friend-pet Pumpkin :) :)
And now I can reveal why I needed the organza to hold the filling inside (as explained in the tutorial file): I needed to add catnip so that Snowy is more fun to play with ;)

How about you? what are YOU making? Let's get the party started!!

Announcement 2:
This month, in order to be eligible for prizes, you are asked to make some amigurumi!

For the first entry (mandatory), you should enter a pet rock (or snow ball, however you want to call it ;) ). For a second entry, you can enter any amigurumi doll that you completed this month!

You can still link up blocks and projects from the Foundation Paper Piecing, Quilting, Crochet and Pixel Quilt tutorials!!

This month the prize is offered by Karen and it is...

I will draw a winner (using random.org) on July 1st between all the new entries in the link party.
International participants are welcome!!

Announcement 3:
And before leaving, I would love to hear some comments from you about this series!
Because there are many people subscribed to the mailing list, many people download the tutorial files but very very few links are added in the link party below :( :(

So if you can spend 5 minutes of your time answering few questions in this survey I would really appreciate!! The survey is anonymous so you can tell me what you think without extra pressure ;)
