Blogger's Quilt Festival - Fall 2017 - Heart of Jade

Size: 18'' x 18''
"Heart of Jade"

This is another mini for my collection of mini Pantone Color of the Year 2017 (Greenery... which for me is not just a single color because it reminds me of all the greens in nature, thus the super scrappy look)

The pattern is by a friend (Yanicka), who developed this new technique to make these super cool and modern design: it is NOT paper piecing, it is much much simpler! For the pattern and more information, visit Yanicka's blog!

This is my first entry for the Blogger Quilt Festival, Mini Quilt!

If you are new around here, WELCOME!
If you have been around for a while, THANKS AND WELCOME BACK! :)

If you are new around here, let me just point you to my main addiction: designing and sharing for free tons of paper piecing patterns :)

As you can see from one of my old headers arrangement, I design patterns for Disney characters, Peanuts and Snoopy, Downton Abbey, Alice in Wonderland but I have many many more (Maleficent, The Simpsons, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Betty Boop, Minions and more)!! Some of them have to be tested, some of there are tested. You can find them just navigating the different tabs or just typing the character name in the search box at the top of the page.

Pantone's Color of the Year for 2016 are actually two colors.
Serenity (light blue) and Rose Quartz.
They wanted to make a statement about gender blur, balance, tranquil tones.
I heard/read all kind of "negative" comments about those colors (like they are too "baby", dated, etc...) and even if I don't particularly like them either, they spoke to me in some way and I was able to finish my traditional wall hanging before the year even started!

Let me introduce you "Serenity"

Serenity - 17'' x 17''

This is inspired by the Firefly ship (Serenity) and a quote in the movie "I am a leaf on the wind - watch how I soar." I appliqued the word Serenity as in the movie posters (I hope it's right, if it's not, please don't tell me ;) ) and I appliqued a leaf, surrounded by a echo of its shape done by quilting. It reminds me of ripples in the water, which is a good match with the color and the theme, I think!

I bound it with the same color as the background, with some pink accents. I never used the same color for the binding and while I think it worked here, I don't particularly like it. I think my eyes prefer to see a definite border around a quilt!

And, just for fun, here is the line up of all my past Color of the Year wall hangings!!

The sixth and final clue of Bonnie Hunter's Mystery QAL is out. I decided to follow along, but I made 1/4 of the units because I don't need a big quilt and I was not sure if I liked the design :)

Now that I see the overall quilt, my thought is: I am happy I followed along! I like the design!!!

I decided to go with brighter colors: cyan/aqua/teal (instead of red) and bright yellow (instead of gold). I will donate this quilt to charity as a baby quilt, so I want it to be fun and colorful!

I was so worried about not following the instructions in term of scrappyness: I didn't have a constant grey, I didn't have sets, I went scrappy all the way. And I am super happy I did!!

If you check the layout, you may see "sets" because I had about 5/6 fabrics for all the units so repeats happened and I used them to make few blocks less scrappy. I really like how it turned out, bright and cheerful as hoped. The scrappyness of the greys and black adds interest when you look at the quilt close by, without distracting too much from the overall design from far away!
This is my first design on point, and it was quite confusing, but I pulled it off.
The most difficult thing was to try to convince my sewing helper not to run on the units as I was trying to figure out where each piece should go :)

Sixth clue of Bonnie's mystery QAL...

ETA: I added a piano border!
Size: 46'' x 60''

I said that once my Xmas presents were done, I could start working on my Jane T, and so I did!
I decided to draft all the pattern myself for two reasons: 1. I am sewing everything by machine, but I want to honor the "slowness" of the original Dear Jane... so by drafting myself all the patterns from pictures, I can add the slow attention to the blocks, while sewing them up fast on the machine. 2. while I found patterns online for the blocks, they use up a lot of paper as each pattern is separate. Drafting several block at once, I can optimize their placement in Inkscape and save paper!

So this is my progress

The purple one is a Farmer's Wife block. I don't know the name of the block and I won't call it with its name, because I read super-weird stories about copyright battles from the author of that book with people sharing information for QALs and such. IMHO this is very discouraging since they are all pretty simple designs and I think if people sharing QALs where linking to her book, she could have been happy for the endorsement and free advertisement. Apparently that's not the case...
I am drafting my own patterns I don't want to get in troubles :)
I am not sharing neither the patterns nor cutting directions,
but from now on I will call them the WoaF blocks :)

Progress on the entire quilt. 9 blocks!

And last, but not least, I want to remind you that I am working on charity quilts,
and I would love your help!!
Quilts are for a quilt drive to help the kids in the DC General Homeless Shelter.
And you can help me by donating orphan blocks, partial blocks, or fabric (scraps, strips, leftover, uglies, whatever).
If you are willing to mail them to me, I could use them to make more quilts for these kids!!!
If you are up for a loving donation, please send me an email at tweloq[_at_]gmail[dot_com] or leave a comment here with your email address so I could give you my mailing address. I promise that your donation will be used to make some kids happy and feel more loved!!

This week, I will count the Allietare quilt as progress. I will probably add a top/bottom border to make it a toddler size,  but for now I count it as a great progress for the week!!! :)

Yesterday, in this post, I shared my entry for the Pantone Quilt Challenge for the Color of the Year.
This is my little Marsala wall hanging. If you want to read more about it, just check out the previous post!

Last week Mary, my partner for the Spring Mug Rug Swap received the package so now I can share it with you!

Patterns by Jennifer (Sewhooked)
Butterfly: sewhooked.com/free-quilt-patterns/ (in Perennial Pleasure pattern)

Mary told me she likes tea, patriotic themed projects and the ocean, so I tried to include all these elements in the little mug rug! This was my first time doing prairie points and of course I had to make my life difficult by choosing to make them super tiny (they finish probably less than 3/4 inches)! ;) I think they turned out pretty cute: and they are scrappy and irregular like the waves of the ocean!

--
Another super secret project I made earlier this month was for the wonderful Jennifer (Sewhooked).
This is what I made for her.

Stained glass wall hanging (18''x23'')

The wall hanging was designed to reproduce a stained glass piece made by her mother-in-law (who passed away earlier this year).
Jennifer shared more pictures of both works (and very kind words) in her post on Sewhooked
--
Another great news is that the package of row/round counters that I ordered from the amazing Terry (Snowie44) arrived!! And it didn't just have the 5 wonderful row/round counters that I ordered, but she was so kind to add some extra cute stitch markers for me and a little toy for my sewing helper!! :)

As you can see below, Pumpkin first read the little note Terry included and then she went completely nuts playing with Fred (the Fish).

Now I am looking forward to start another crochet/knitting project to use those great little tools!!
--
Finally, the little stitching that I can share, is the first block for a wall hanging for my dad: he requested a decorative piece for our house in the mountains, so I will use many "nature" inspired fabric and patterns. This is the first block

Marsala - 2015 Pantone Challenge

My entry for the 2015 Pantone Quilt challenge, Marsala:

This is a little wall hanging (size: 13x14 inches)

I have a tradition of making these "color of the year" wall hanging to decorate my sewing space.

My general layout is a center block representing the "object" of the color, and a scrappy border containing different colors similar to the color of the year and with shapes somehow connected to the main theme.

So this year, the choice of the border was pretty easy: with a theme like Marsala, isn't the "Drunkard's Path" (a design makes one think of a drunkards staggering walk) just the perfect border? ;)

Some close-up pics to see the quilting (I quilted some grapes and grape leaves)

And the fabric on the back is also pretty cool I think :)

And yes, if you look close to the picture of the front you may have noticed some fabric bleeding :( :( oh, well... I will try to fix it probably, one day... but in the meantime, we can pretend it's the artistic touch of Marsala wine stains ;)

Follow THIS LINK TO SEE ALL THE OTHER PROJECTS... and in 7 days the voting will open and I will ask you to vote for me ;) (or a different one... there are amazing quilts/projects over there... but if you vote mine I would be very very happy ;) )

As a last note, these are my wall hangings for 2013 and 2014... just for fun!

Let's start with my two new projects: one finished and one in progress.

The finished one is this

My small ironing board needed a new cover... badly :)
This is a super quick project, I followed Melissa's tutorial to put it together but I used only one fabric instead of piecing the rainbow. The fabric I used is special because we found this big scrap of cotton in the house of out previous landlord's mom. She passed away right before we moved to our house. At that time I didn't even know what sewing meant... but for some reasons my boyfriend picked up this piece of fabric that stayed in our closet for two years. Now to honor her memory, I have a wonderful ironing board cover and soon I will use the rest for some other decorative item for my sewing space: in this way we will always remember her!

The second project is a pair of crochet slippers. It's the first time I try to make this kind of object! And I was inspired by next month's tutorial for Stretch Your Skills (spoiler alert: it does NOT have anything to do with slippers ;) but it's crochet, so it encouraged me to get my crochet hook going and to use up the extra yarn I have on hand). The foot part turned out great... I will post pictures and more details when both feet are done! ;) but I am so excited about these new small projects that are inspired by the SYS adventure!
This is why you should try to follow along: you never know what the SYS tutorial may inspire you to do!! :) :)

--
Now for the finishes that I cannot share:

Color of the Year challenge:
(this is my March project for a Lovely Year of Finishes)
I promise... it's completely done (and washed with some issues, hence the question below ;) )
But I don't want to show it just yet... waiting for the challenge to actually start!

Spring Mug Rug Swap:
I joined this swap on FB and it was super fun! Again I can only share a sneak peek because I want to be a surprise for my partner... but I used a technique that I never tried before, and I think it tuned out pretty cute! ;)

--
And finally, something I can share: one more animal block for my charity quilts project!

Lion King, by Jennifer @ Sewhooked
--
Oh, and I received the blocks from my March partner from the Block Swap Adventure (Zuzana from Ireland). Aren't they cute?
--
My question to you:
How do you clean color bleed stains? I soaked my Marsala mini into water to get the washable markings that I used to trace the quilting off, and some of the "marsala" fabric start bleeding! I had a color catcher in the container, but I think that those things work best in the washing machine (where the water moves around) but as the piece was still, not all the bleeding color got caught :(
It's not too much and maybe if I put the entire piece in the washing it will go away... but I was wondering if you have any trick/product to apply on the stain or in the water to help fixing the issue!

Bloggers Quilt Festival - Mini - Radiant Orchid

(Don't forget to check my other entry (in the Scrappy category))

If you are new to my blog WELCOME!!
If you are a constant reader, THANKS for your support!! :)

If you are new around here, let me just point you to my main addiction: designing and sharing for free tons of paper piecing patterns :)

As you can see from my header picture I designed patterns for Disney characters, Peanuts and Snoopy, Downton Abbey, Alice in Wonderland but I have many many more (Maleficent, The Simpsons, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Betty Boop, Minions and more)!! Some of them have to be tested, some of there are tested. You can find them just navigating the different tabs or just typing the character name in the search box at the top of the page.

And my entry for this Blogger Quilt Festival is a paper pieced one (obviously) ;)
This is the mini I designed for the 2014 Pantone Quilt challenge, Radiant Orchid:

This is a little wall hanging (size: 17x17 inches)

I love scrappy projects... and I am pretty sure that one of the fabric I used is Radiant Orchid... I have no idea which one because it's hard to see the real colors on a computer screen... but I used so many different purple/pink tones that I must have picked something that is pretty close to the real Radiant Orchid ;)

And a few close-ups and the back to see better the quilting...
It's the first time I quilt with color thread... I don't know if I like it... it's easy to see the "mistakes" but I think it's ok, considering the fact that is one of my first time I try a design different than stitch-in-the-ditch :)

If you want to make your own orchid block, the pattern is available in my Craftsy shop!!

And let me throw an additional bonus mini if you are still here :)
This is the other "Color of the Year" wall hanging I pieced: Emerald. I decided to make color of the year wall hanging for each year that I have been sewing... I don't have much backlog since I just started last year LOL ;)

Now go and check out all amazing project's in the Festival.
