Journaling and planning: July 2017 update

I think I finally converged to my ultimate journal!

My planning journey is like my quilting journey: from the first weeks I immediately know what I like and what my overall style is. However the more I plan, the more tools I want to buy and the more experiments I want to run! This month, off again to a new journal!

For disclaimers about how I personally use this Journal/Planner system, please refer to these previous posts: Mid-year reviewMay reviewApril reviewMarch reviewDecember review (evolution of a Quilter's Planner), November reviewOctober review, September review.

As mentioned in my May review, while I liked the blank pages in my pink journal (and the thick paper that allowed me to color in without ruining the back of the page), I needed some kind of structure, and the dot grid of the Emerald Leuchtturm 1917 provides the right amount of space and structure.

Before jumping into the monthly and weekly pages, since this is a new book I needed some general project and event trackers

(click on each picture if you want to see them in more details)

So I created a tracker for my packages and cards (to send and receive) so that I can know in a glance what is missing and what's coming up.
I created a "Rubity, Scrubity, Sweepity" tracker to record things that I need to do regularly but not too often (like washing quilts, color my hair, change the air filters).
I created a "Brain dump" where I pencil in things that I should not forget but they don't have a space or a time just yet. Then I started a reading list, to keep track of the books I read.
And finally I creatd a page where I record the blocks I make for the 70273 project.

I kept on with the practice of selecting an artist each month and using her art to decorate my planning. Since this book has many pages, I decided to start making "month cover pages" and this is my July page, inspired by the work of Agnes Martin.

Each week now is on two pages, and this gives me space to be creative (by integrating the artist style into the decoration of the days) but also to be practical (by listing daily taks, ideas for meals, exercise practice and even some new recipes or plans for quilting projects!)

Below you can see the daily tracker, with my weight tracker and my steps/water mandala. I stopped tracking my water intake, so I will change it up for next month! :)

These trackers/collections are also great to keep big project under control: for example I am running a short Quilt and Stitch along on Fandom in Stitches (Long live the King, Stephen) and I need to understand which patterns have been tested, which ones are in PDF format, if they have been added to the blog post, etc. A simple table on a single journal page is all I need to have a clear idea of what's coming next!! :)

I kept it up with the Free Motion Daily Doodle spread: each day is a different design from Leah Day's blog... it is very interesting to practise all these designs in small spaces and see if I like making them or not: no thread or fabric wasted :)  I also added a coloring legend to remember which designs I love, like or don't like: that's essential for times when I want to pick a quilting designs and I don't remember which one I enjoyed and which was frustrating to draw!!

Last but not least...

Few words about the Leuchtturm1917 dotted journal

  • it may look like an "expensive" journal, however consider that it has 250 pages and for the first month I used about 20... which means that the journal will last me about a year! If you divide the price for this amount of use, I think it's totally worth it.
  • the quality of the page is kind of "weird" for me: it's smooth, off-white and I love writing on it! and I think that the dotted grid is the perfect balance of structure and freedom. However pens ghost (which means that you can kind of see what it is on the back of the page. The weird thing is that the ghosting does not bother me at all!! Actually it's very nice because it helps when I need to reproduce the same spread (like every week) and it's a metaphor of life (as everything we do is affected by what happened before and it will affect what happens next :) ).
  • Ghosting is different than bleeding... and I didn't have any ink bleeding in those pages! Even if my August cover page is heavily colored with black markers, no ink is visible on the other side (just the shadow of the coloring itself)
  • The rigid cover is so fantastic to take the journal on the go and use it anywhere! I made full spreads and collections on a chair waiting for a doctor appointment and I didn't have any problem at all!!

I am all set up for August: I changed up few things that I want to track, dropped some, added others: this is the beauty of this planning style, you can change it up to suit your mood and style!

If you have any question about my planner, my spreads, my comments, etc, don't hesitate to comment below. Also please share planning, tracking and productivity tips, as those are always welcome!!!!

Bullet Journal - December review (evolution of my Quilter's Planner)

My Bullet Journaling experience is getting better and better!!
Grab a cold or hot beverage... this is a looooong post!! :) :) :)

For disclaimers about how I personally use the Bullet Journal system, please refer to these previous posts: November reviewOctober review, September review.

At the end of October I received the Quilter's Planner (on the top left) so I decided to use it as the main planner. However, as I said last month, while I love the size and the general idea and look of the planner, I cannot function in a planner that does not allow customization.

So last month I took off the plastic ring spiral, and replaced it with few 1'' Loose Leaf Binder Rings. I distributed them along the side of the page so they will keep the pages together in a stable manner but they will allow me to quickly open them up and move/add/remove pages (top right in the picture above).

While I liked the general idea, I didn't really liked the wobblyiness and the fact that to move pages around I still had to open several rings, punch many holes, etc.

I was watching a gazillion of videos about planners on youtube and I found that there are many people that had similar problems with a very famous planner (Erin Condren) which is spiral bound... and I found a person Turned her Erin Condren into a Discbound system!!
I didn't even know what a "discbound" system is... I've never seen it before...
And after watching many videos, I understood how it worked, but it didn't really convinced me much... it looked still wobbly and not very practical.

Until one day I want to Hobby Lobby and I started flipping trough the Happy Planners (which are Discbound systems) and OMG I loooooved them!!!
I bought the punch (which is an investment but with a coupon is not that expensive) I bought few rings and by the end of the week I trimmed all the Quilter's planner pages (to remove the holes), I punched new holes and I put them into my new system!!

In the last two weeks I already changed the cover of the planner 3 times :) I cannot stop!! It makes me so happy to be able to move pages back and forth, change things in few seconds and keep everything where I need it... And look at all those suuuuupeeeeer cheap cover options (File folders from the dollar store) :) :) :)

Help! Someone needs to stop me!! I have too many file folders!! :)

And as a side note, there a gazillion of tutorial to make any kind of DYI accessory for this kind of planner: pouches, pockets, stencils, bookmarks, pen-loops, anything!!!

Ok, now back to my monthly flipthough...

-- DAILY CHALLENGES--

Another month of my "Doodle A Daily Quilting Design"!

Each day I took a design from Leah Day's Quilting Design Gallery. I love how this turned out because now I have two pages that I can reference to when I don't know which quilting design to use in my project; they are all there on a single page so I don't have to hunt them down on the web, but if I need extra guidance I know where to find it; I was also able to understand which one are more challenging for me and which one are faster. Doing this every day helps to build muscle memory too. As a fun added bonus I doodle around the empty spaces, to make it a themed spread... winter xmas theme :) :)

-- MONTH TRACKER and DOODLE AN ARTIST --

The December tracker is sparse in some rows, and pretty full in others... I used a circle design to mix up the style of the trackers over the months, and I really love it... some things didn't get done, not even a single time!! Oh well... this is why the Bullet Journal system is great: it helps me reflect on things: one empty row is about reading the "How to think like Da Vinci" book... I have been too busy this month to stop and read that, but I want to finish it eventually so I will just keep the row in the next month tracker.

The "doodle an artist" sections are the ones that I most proud of!! I love the idea and I was looking forward every day to either draw something or find something to draw for the next day. The idea is to pick an artist and then copy some elements from some of her/his pieces (Steal like an Artist). The act of researching their life, reading the story of a painting, trying to extract simple elements that I can sketch just with a pen is very very valuable for me. Considering that I have NO art background, NO art education, I think I copied the different pieces quite well! And it's unbelievable how much the daily practice improved in just a month! It also improved my confidence (in drawing and life) and opened my mind to a world of possibilities.

This month I picked the work of Lennart Helje, who has a very whimsical and Xmasy style: while I loved these designs, I honestly didn't have much time to make more, so I may add more later in the year!!

-- WEEKLY SPREAD --

I love how I design each weekly spread page.
It's simple, it's cute (at least the latest ones are becoming cuter), it's functional.
At the beginning of each week, I list few things in the "Quilting and Crafting" section or "Home and Personal" section. I put them in approximate days, but I don't stress about it, because I have the view of the full week, so if I feel that I want to do something on Mon that is listed on Fri (or viceversa) it's all good!!
I also have a page where I list things that I think I could do montly/weekly and then in the main tracker I just refer to weekly todo or monthly todo. This creates an additional page where I can write other things that are relevant for the month (like Songs! or other notes). As mentioned before, I like having empty spaces as I can come back later and play around with them!!

No Weekly Spread recipes this month because I have been too busy!! :)

-- FITNESS MANDALA (in pictures above) --

I have been trying to find interesting ways to track my fitness activities (steps for example) and I thought that making a mandala would be visually interesting! :)
I created circles that represent a certain distance (5000 steps, 10000, 20000) and then in each slice (representing the days) I designed a motif that, repeated 31 times, would create a nice mandala. Of course the incentive is that if I reach 10000 each day the mandala would be nice and full... if not I will see missing chunks!
This again is a way to help me reflect on myself (not to feel bad about the missing chunks): for example I realized that during the week it's easy for me to reach my 10000 steps goals, but in the weekends or holidays I prefer to stay home. For my wellness, I could just integrate some indoor exercise to compesate for the steps, and this is my plan for next month, but I wouldn't have realized this if I didn't visually see what my patterns are.

I also added some water tracking... I have a Smart Bottle... yes, I have been obsessed with tracking so this is another piece of the puzzle :) :) :)

-- SPECIAL EVENTS --

-- Be Our Guest (in pictures above) --

We have visitors, staying in our home for several weeks... which means I had to clean the entire house! Since my house has specific rooms and things that won't change, I designed a spread that lists all the things I need to clear/sort/tidy/scrub/sweep/prepare, and I added several columns to accomodate possible future guests. This was a great way to get things done little by little and don't get overwhealmed at the last minute!!

-- En Provence Mystery QAL (tracker) -- (in pictures above)

I designed a little visual tracker to count the blocks I am making for Bonnie Hunter's current mystery. I am waaaaaaaaaay behind but I plan to add a sketch of the final layout, the specific blocks each clue represents, etc. For now I just color one circle to count 5 blocks made :)

--
Two final notes:
  1. you may wonder: is it really possible to spend so much time and effort decorating a planner and still have time to actually do all the things you planned? The answer is in my boyfriend words... he kept asking me "how come all of a sudden you became Marta Stewart with all this cooking, cleaning and organizing?" and he doesn't even see that I am still keeping up with all my quilting projects, I finished the xmas presents and I am also all caught up on all my tv series!! :) :) :) So the point is: either this planner creates extra time in the day... OR... the fact that I am dedicating so much time and effort in writing down the plans, make me very very efficient, intentional and mindful when I am actually doing the different tasks, so they take less time and I can do more, without too much stress!! so my answer to his question was "it's the planner!!! :) :)"
  2. given that I am covering up and redesign every page, why don't I just use a blank journal instead of the Quilter's Planner? Well... even if I don't use the original layout, I still take inspiration from all the extra information they included (blocks every week, quilting designs, tips, patterns, etc.) so I think it's worth using a themed planner rather than a blank journal. Plus I just used it for a month, so I didn't really have the time to look into all the planning pages that I may use in the future. Finally I really like projects that get the community together, so I wanted to give my support to the authors by buying their product and I want to interact with others that are using this great planner!!
If you have any comment or question, please write below! I will be happy to share my thoughts!!!

Bullet Journal - November review (Quilter's Planner)

My Bullet Journaling experience is getting better and better!!
Grab a cold or hot beverage... this is a looooong post!! :) :) :)

For disclaimers about how I personally use the Bullet Journal system, please refer to these previous posts: October review, September review.

One additional disclaimer is that this month has a loooooot of new content and this is pretty unusual: it's a new month, it's a brand new journal, it's a time of the year with extra activities, special days, etc.
So don't get intimidated or discouraged if you think you wouldn't be able to do something so big. Read to the end and you will see that despite the high number of pages, I got more done than than ever before!!

At the end of October I received the Quilter's Planner (on the left) so I decided to end my previous journey in the small notebook and I honored that step with a final doodle on the previous notebook (on the right).

Few comments on the Quilter's Planner, and the way it was working (and not working) for me.
  1. it is big!! I thought that was a problem since I was used to plan on pages half the size. However I then realized that I can fit twice the number of trackers, doodles, speads on the same page, which has an added bonus of encouraging to complete more things since they are all right in front of me!
  2. it is "heavy". I use this planner at home, so that is not too big of a deal, but I realized it is heavy because it contains a great amount of high quality paper and high quality dividers... however I don't use the dividers (see later for details) so I took the planner apart :)
  3. it has a spiral ring, which makes it "stable" but unchangable (meaning you cannot customize the content)... I changed that, see below
  4. it has a plastic beautiful designed hard cover. I thought I wouldn't like the plastic feel (we all love soft fabric after all), however after using it for a full month, I appreciate how good and clean the plastic looks, even after heavy use!! :)
Ok... now let me show you some of my pages and shares some of the lessons I learned!!
Click each picture to see all the details.

-- DECONSTRUCTED PLANNER --

As mentioned before, I don't like planners that are static... so I took the planner apart and did the following changes (you can see them in pictures below)
  • I took off the plastic ring spiral, and replaced it with few 1'' Loose Leaf Binder Rings. I distributed them along the side of the page so they will keep the pages together in a stable manner but they will allow me to quickly open them up and move/add/remove pages. This system makes the entire planner a little more wobbly (because the rings are free to move) but not too much, so the advantage of being able to open the rings at any point in the planner really beats the disadvantage of being a little more unstable
  • I took off most of the dividers (I will create a pattern book with them, will share next month) and added just two (Mickey Mouse themed) bookmarks: one on the page of the main tracker, one on the page of the current week. They are small, light, easy to access (as they have different widths) and they can be moved as the time progresses. The second bookmark has an extra function too... but you will have to read more below to see it :).
I also added two ribbons (from fat quarter bundles) to have even more ways to reach pages without adding bulk or weight. One says "Free Spirit" which seems to be appropriate for my way of approaching life :)
  • I have been playing around with different paper weights: I tried cartboard kind of pages (fine, but too thick), I tried some normal printer paper (too thin) and finally I bought Premium Laser Paper (32 lb) and this is fantastic: nice color, same weight as the other planner's pages, great for all my doodles and colors. The added bonus it that now I am printing my own graph papers, with all kind of motifs (more next month)
And now that you know how I deconstructed the planner, let's get down to the actual content

-- INDEX--
First page is always the index. I number my pages only on the right so I will have multiple spreads and trackers on the same 2 pages (see below). It makes sense to me as the index is just for general reference, it doesn't have to be super precise!
Because this planner has big pages, I also have empty pages (marked in pencil in my index) and I love that as sometimes I just need to write down a quote or a doodle, and I can just include them within my pages wherever there is space!

-- DAILY CHALLENGES--

It is fun to participate in daily challenges because they are community efforts that keep you engaged and inspired. There are a billion of these in the bullet journal community, and in previous months I did ZenArtChallenge and RockYourHandwriting. Both have daily prompts to guide you on what to draw/write on. While I enjoyed both, I didn't really feel enthusiastic enough, so I dropped them.

However I am enthusiastic about quilting! So this month I turned this challenge into a "DoodleAQuiltingDesign" kind of thing instead!

As a fun added bonus I doodle around the empty spaces, to make it a themed spread... because it's November and it's the month before Xmas :) :)

-- MAIL TRACKER --
The mailing tracker is good to track if people receive what you send and if you receive what you are supposed to. In this new journal I decided not to divide into months, but just keep writing until the page is full. I also added a little cardboard envelope to hold the receipts from the post office so that if I need a tracking number I know where to find it.

Having a spread to track what I receive/order makes me also very mindful about my spending. Even if I don't track finances, I can see if I am ordering too many things. I tried to make a little fabric tab too. While it is cute, I don't think it's practical for me, so that won't be used in the future! :)

-- DEAR SANTA, and THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS --

Here are some fun pages!!

From the right to the left

  • Through the looking glass is my handwriting practice spread.
In previous months RockYourHandwriting was an interesting daily challenge to help improve my handwriting. I like my handwriting and I don't think it needs much improvement :) HOWEVER... I read that people that are ambidextrous are more creative, and people with extreme creative minds (like Leonardo da Vinci) wrote mirrored (meaning all letters are flipped). So I wanted to practice these different types of handwriting!! :) :) :)
I decided not to write personal things (because it requires too much thinking, and I just want to write), so when I heard that France O’Roark Dowell shared some Quilty stories on quiltfiction.com, I decided to copy paragraphs of those! Quilty stories in the Quilter's Planner, it seemed right!! So (from the right to the left) you can see two pages of my daily writing with my non-dominant hand and mirrored style: oh it's ugly, shaky and hard!! But by the end of the month it really improved and I am now able to write quite fast without thinking too much about each letter! Plus Persimmon Moon is quite a nice story, just pop over to the website and get a copy for yourself!!!
  • Dear Santa is the page that helped me tracking the Xmas presents.
I split the receipient between the ones that are at home (the stockings), the ones that will only receive a card (with handmade decoration, they are listed in the big bag) and the ones that will receive a package. The number of packages is exactly the number of boxes I will need to send out, and each box may have more than one receipient (names are listed in the ribbons in each corner). Each present is listed with three checkboxes, that will be marked as the things get done: one checkbox = present ready, two = present wrapped, three = present in the box and ready to go. The sack with the cards has two lists: the cards that will go in the mailed boxes, and the cards that will go out by themseves. Finally two sections list past presents and gifts that I bought but don't have a recipient.
While the spread looks kind of chaotic, it really makes sense to me and it is the reason why 95% of the presents are all ready already!! :)

-- MONTH TRACKER and DOODLE AN ARTIST --

The November tracker is sparse in some rows, and pretty full in others... I used the triangle design to match the planner cover, and I really love it... some things didn't get done, not even a single time!! Oh well... this is why the Bullet Journal system is great: it helps me reflect on things: one empty row is about reading the "How to think like Da Vinci" book... I have been too busy this month to stop and read that, but I want to finish it eventually so I will just keep the row in the next month tracker.
Exercise is another row that didn't get a single mark: here I want to get better, but I don't want to stress too much about it, so I changed the row into "Cook and Sweat" for next month, so that I can alternate my "weekly specials" cooking habit and exercise throughout the week and get the exercise done at least few times a week. Let's see how this is going to work! Sometimes all we need is a little mindset change, but it is hard to find what works!! :)

This month I picked the work of Keith Haring, who has a very interesting style: not really my cup of tea, but I like to push myself outside my comfort zone. I also doodle things by Tula Pink and by Disney artists, but I included those in other pages (see below). For me it is very important to learn to draw by copying what others are doing and finding my own style!!

--WEEKLY SPREAD--

I love how I designed this page.

In my weekly spread you can see that I included 2 "weekly specials" which are two simple recipes that I want to try!
I am not a cooking kind of person... or cleaning kind of person :)
I don't like cooking (or cleaning) because these are things that require time and love and once they are done they don't last!! :) :) the planner solved the problem in my mind... the planner keeps a permanent reference that the cooking/cleaning happened and that encourages me to do more cooking/cleaning. It is weird, I know, but it works, so who cares!!! :) :)

You can also see my second bookmark: I build it with top/bottom "tabs" that hold my shopping list! In this way I know where it is and I can add things as time goes by.

-- FITNESS MANDALA --

I have been trying to find interesting ways to track my fitness activities (steps for example) and I thought that making a mandala would be visually interesting! :)
I created circles that represent a certain distance (5000 steps, 10000, 20000) and then in each slice (representing the days) I designed a motif that, repeated 30 times, would create a nice mandala.

On the left page, you can see my test with washi tape and fabric sticked to the page with double side 0.5'' tape. This works just great and I will use this technique in my quilting pages for swatches!!

-- SPECIAL EVENTS --

My Thanksgiving cooking planning (and review) on the right page!
It really helps writing down everything on a single page, as I made sure that nothing was missing!! :) and again I have a record of what worked and what didn't in terms of dishes, so it's good for future planning.

On the left the planning for my 2017 QAL. This has not been announced yet (will be announced on Monday) so don't read too closely ;)
I included it just to show that it is cool sometimes to add some fancy scrapbooking cards and material! I used that card to create more space as I didn't want to add an extra page but I wanted to write few more things on the back of the card! :)

-- YEAR LONG PROJECTS --

We all have those giant year long projects that take forever to complete!
For me the problem is that after the initial enthusiasm they fall on the back of my mind and then I forget about them.
Having them written (drawn) out on a page, helps me understand where I should focus my attention.

So in these two pages I included:

  1. The Splendid Sampler tracking, which includes two trackers: the center pyramid just counts how many blocks I made until now, and the numbers on the two corners show which blocks I actually made (since I don't follow the progressive order). Since I made the tracker at the beginning of the month, I added about 10 blocks, so it was a great incentive!!
  2. The 70273 project: I track how many blocks I send out. It is just a little project for me, so I used a small column, but again, since I made the tracker, I added 12 blocks to the group!
  3. I have 3 empty sections to track (over the course of 2017) charity quilts and "black box projects" which are my UFO (stored in a black box :) ).
  4. The Stephen King project is a giant project I started several years ago, where I want to create two blocks for 50 books by SK: one block is the opening line (embroidery) and the other block is the book cover (pp or applique). So the bookcase I drew has 100 books and I colored in the blocks I made. I can immediately see that I miss just abot 10 opening lines, but I am waaaaay behind with the book covers :)
After I made the tracker, again I added about 12 new blocks.
To me, the power of these trackers is in the fact that they are all together and they are visually very clear: I can see where I am behind and I am encouraged to complete more on these projects because I want to color my trackers!!!

The same logic applies to my "Rubity, Scrubity, Sweepity" :) while I would like to be like Merlin, I have to admit that I am not great in cleaning, tidying, sorting, etc. This is why I designed a fun tracker to just list when I do main things around the house (or on myself): things like cleaning the windows, sorting closets, cabinets, dyeing my hair, doctor appointments, cell phone refills, wash the car etc.
Things that don't really make me happy, but I need to do them because I am an adult :( :( at least I can write them down in a fun and cute tracker with some fun Disney helpers so I don't need to be a super serious and boring adult :) :)

I am so proud of the drawing around this page!! I sketched all the shapes with pencil but I didn't include any detail. All the details were added with the pen so if a line was wrong I had to live with that!! There are some mistakes and things that I would change, but it helps me get more confident with my pen sketching so I will keep using this approach!!

Bullet Journal - September review

Wow, it has been an amazing first month for my Bullet Journaling experience!!
Grab a hot or cold beverage... this is a LONG post :)
(Tomorrow I will post the usual "quilty weekly update") :)

DISCLAIMER 1: in this post I express my own opinions and my own interpretation of how to use the bullet journal system. It is not necessarily aligned with what the "creator" of the system (Ryder Carroll) describes. If you are interested in the basic original approach go to http://bulletjournal.com/ to find more information.

DISCLAIMER 2: if you are one of those people that get upset because I don't follow the "official rules", I add fancy decorations, drawings, etc and those are not "bullet point lists", please just stop reading here! :) While I get inspiration from the original system, I want it to work for ME. And yes, maybe I change it so much that I shouldn't call it Bullet Journal... but calling it "a notebook where I list things to do, plan my activities, projects, draw, write, doodle and learn new things" is a little bit too long :) So I stick with the name.
As Kara (from BoHo Berry) says beautifully (paraphrasing) "I spend some time to make my bullet journal pretty, and that is actually the thing that keeps me coming back to using it, but the reason I use it is because it helps organize my life". So no, the prettiness is not necessary, but how useful is an efficient organizational system that is always stored in a drawer because it is too boring to look at? :)

Ok... now let me show you some of my pages and shares some of the lessons I learned!!
Click each picture to see all the details.

--INDEX--

This is a crazy simple idea that completely changed my mindset!
How it works? You write a collection, spread, or whatever page in your journal, you put a page number and you write it back in the index. Shocking right?
It changed my mindset because my problem with planners is that they are static, they have things in a specific order, you cannot change anything and there is always a lot of "wasted" space.
Here, instead, do I need a page for this week task? I create it, number it, put it back in the index. Now, do I need a page to plan my next three months? I create it (on my first empty page), number it, put it back in the index. Do I mess up a page? Oh well, I glue it and I don't put it back in the index :)
Its flexibility gives you freedom to explore and evolve in what you like.
Its well defined structure allows you to find what you need.

--TRACKER--

I made a page where I track things that I want to do (more or less) once a week, and things that I want to do (more or less) once a month. I don't want to force myself on specific numbers, so that's why I just list the tasks and I color a square every time I do it. Did the weekly things get done 4 times this month? good. 2 times? still good. No times at all? well... did my life fall apart because of this? no... so maybe I don't need to list this task at all next month :)
That's why I like the flexibility of tracking things but changing up the trackers every month. It helps really evaluate what matters and what doesn't in your everyday life.

About the September Tracker...
First: did you notice that even if it lists all the days, it is NOT called daily tracker? That made a huge difference for me. Daily means I feel compelled to do that task every day... and if I don't, I feel guilty. That is not the point of this tracker! You track what you do, then you evaluate at the end of the month, no guilt involved.
That's why I actually, on purpose, chose to put in the trackers events that:

  1. I ALREADY do every day (those will get colored in very easily, boosting my happiness)
  2. things that is very likely I will do very often (challenges, doodles, ...)
  3. things that I hope to do more often (like exercise or mend socks :) )
  4. things that I know will be done just on few specific days (like blog posts)

This mix allows me to feel less guilty about leaving squares blank (because some rows are supposed to be mostly blank anyway), but also motivated to color rows because some other rows get so many squares already!!
It's a personal challenge to find the right balance... that's why you can change the things you list every month.

--DAILY/MONTHLY/CALENDEX/FUTURE LOG/MEMORIES/GRATITIUDES--
I don't have any of those... and they are all part of the "official" system.
The point is that I have a full time job, so I don't need to list/track what I do every day (I already have a planner in the office for that). I don't need to see the entire month in advance since I am trying to track my crafty projects, so one week at the time is better. I don't need to see the next 6/9/12 months either. And I don't need to doodle memories since I have the "1secondeveryday" app that already does it. So I don't include these in my bullet journal. And that is ok! :)
Maybe I will in the future, maybe not, who knows! But that's the point... add to yours what YOU feel is good for YOU.
Bad trackers/pages may compromise the entire system because you may think that since you don't track your daily activity then the entire bullet journal idea is not useful... That's NOT the case... just be open and don't be afraid to experiment!

--WEEKLY SPREAD--

I love how I designed this page.

As you may have noticed, I tried to use the "key" system for several weeks. Meaning that I list the task with a bullet point and I put an X on it when done.
I hated it.
An X is a small thing, and I would have still to scroll the entire page with my eyes to understand what is missing and what has been completed. After trying to see if I get used to that official system, I abandoned it and came up with an easier way for me: I color things that are done and cross things that I don't want/need to do (or things that I moved to the following week). This is going great, I get more things done and I am less frustrated. Sorry Carroll, your key system makes totally sense but my brain doesn't like it!

--CHALLENGES--

It is fun to participate in daily challenges because they are community efforts that keep you engaged and inspired. There are a billion of these in the bullet journal community, and I picked two that made sense to me: ZenArtChallenge and RockYourHandwriting.
Both have daily prompts to guide you on what to draw/write on.
While I enjoyed them, I also felt they didn't work for me as I was hoping.
The handwriting one it is fun, but I don't have a desire to improve my handwriting (I think it looks fine when I write slowly) plus I don't want to think about what to write, I just want to write. So I initially changed it to "I will copy a piece of a song that I hear on the radio and I will practice different fonts"... while it was fun, again it didn't click. One day I was reading "How to think like Leonardo Da Vinci" and I read that he wrote "mirrored"... that's where it clicked: I can practice my mirrored writing one day (meaning writing with my right hand, but writing each letter mirrored and writing right to left) and the other day I can practice my non-dominant hand writing!! Oh, wow, now we have an interesting challenge! Are these pages ugly? You bet! Am I improving and learning funky new skills: yes indeed! :)
For the ZenArtChallenge, I like zentangles but I don't particularly like designs that require a lot of shading or designs of object (flowers, ...). I will do it again next month, but I think that in Nov I will turn that into a "DoodleAQuiltingDesign" kind of thing instead... we'll see!

--DOODLES--

Pages to draw, doodle and have fun with lettering, fonts and no constrains.
The first one is just to test some cute dividers, doodles and fonts to use in my weekly spread or special events page.
The second one is again very free form: just pick 5 words (completely random, long, short, in my own language or any other language) and just "draw" the word in a special font. Not having the constrains of writing long sentences it allowed me to get more creative and wild! The only rule I told myself is to write them all horizontal so they will end up forming a "label cloud" kind of design.

The "doodle an artist" pages are the ones that I most proud of!! YOU SHOULD TRY THIS TOO, especially if you think you don't know how to draw!! just pick a simple clipart and copy that... you will see great improvement if you do it consistently for weeks. Don't try to make it perfect... just keep drawing new things every day and you cannot not improve!! :)

--SPECIAL DAYS--

These are the most useful trackers for me.
If I have to organize an event (like hosting a lunch, dinner, etc), I need to think about how to arrange the house, what to cook and when, how to decorate, etc. Having these lists that highlight what still needs to be done and what is ready made me feel in complete control of the situation. Plus now I have a cute record of the events!

--OTHER TRACKERS--

Again, remember that you don't need to track everything, and you don't need to go completely analog. I have my digital tracking system for many details and for the initial (more messy) setup of things... but when I have a clear path ahead and few things to track, I really enjoy taking the time to put it on paper.

--
There are a gazillion of ideas on other collections or things that you may want to track (exercise, finance, reading, watching, ...) but I tried to start with just few of them to really see if I was going to enjoy the process of using an analog system to organize parts of my life... I love it... so I will add more collections in future months!!

LAST TIP (VERY IMPORTANT):
I highly highly recommend to start your first bullet journal on a super cheap notebook (I got mine several years ago in a grocery store, it's pretty low quality paper) and just start with a single pen. Use things that you have around your house already. In this way if it is not super pretty right away, or you end up not liking the process, you don't feel guilty of "wasting" a super cute journal. Plus some items (pens, journals, stickers, ...) are quite expensive, but you may want to try the simple ones first. When I started quilting, I didn't start with the high quality fabric and machine that I am using now, but I am happy that I eased into the craft so I could thoroughly enjoy the growth.

DO YOU HAVE A BULLET JOURNAL? Do you share your ideas and comments? If so, please leave a comment below with a link to your blog/instagram. We will love to see it and get inspired!!

On September 13th, I was one of the participats in "The Road Home Row Along"

Hosted by Marian @ seamstobesew and Amy @ sewincrediblycrazy

You can read my full post HERE (with the pattern to download and the giveaways).

This is what my row actually looks like
Yeah, it's missing the embroidery clothline and the thread sketched shadow for the postcards...
Oh well :) eventually it will go in a quilt and I will add those!! :)

    --
The last board for the Play with Me QAL!

Even if this is the last board, you could still join and have the chance to win amazing prizes for the final giveaway of the QAL. If you made even a single board, you could win one of SEVEN prizes... just saying :) Just send me an email or leave a comment below if you have questions!

    --
I finally assembled the baby quilt from Melissa's Summer Solstice QAL.
This is where the "curvy week" started :)

I think the design is really beautiful!!
I love the effect of the circle in the middle and the curved border. I will just have to remember to use more stable fabric: I used fabric donated for charity quilts, and some of it was much thinner than others... this caused some frustration during the assembly... however I never aim at perfect points, so who cares!! :)
    --
Without even realizing it, I designed this mini for my Teal Swap partner... it's curved piecing again!!
Well, with all this practice I am getting better!! :)

    18'' x 18''

She said she likes country colors... I thought I didn't have any "country" colors because it's not my style at all... but this is where precut bundles come very handy: I had many charm packs and layer cakes where I pulled out the colors I liked... and guess what was left behind? "country" colors!! :)
I wanted to coordinate well with the teal fabric we were given and I really like the final effect and layout. I hope my partner will like it too!!

    --
Ok, seriously? When I checked the blocks that one of my Hello Block Swap partners for September wanted, guess what I found... Curved piecing again!! Oh well!! :)

    --
Back with my embroidery quotes from Stephen King books. The pictures are not that great, but I don't have time to take better ones so for now this will have to do :)

    The Dark Tower
    Wolves of the Calla

I will share the pattern eventually on Fandom in Stitches... if you want them before, just send me an email or leave a comment with your contact info and I will send it your way!
    --
It's never too soon to start my Xmas decoration project!
I make one handmade decoration for my tree each year... using all kind of techniques and materials. This year is cross stitching!!
It is not complete yet, so next week I will have a better picture, and maybe a pattern :)

    --
I have been using my Bullet Journaling system pretty consistently and I found that it helps me being creative and productive!!
I will discuss the daily/weekly/monthly trackers next month, but these are just few collections that I really loved keeping up with

(Left) Zen art challenge: a little zentagle each day. Not my best work, but given the size of the notebook, I think it's pretty cool!
(Right) organizing my thoughts and activity for a "Lunch with Friends" I hosted last week. I am a single person, with a single kitchen and just two hands :) Having the full plan on what to cook and when (and what to clean) was essential to guarantee the success of the lunch!

"Doodle an Artist" collection! Every 15 days I will pick an artist (painter probably) and doodle elements from some of her/his pieces! First month: Salvador Dali!
I have no art training nor background, so keeping the doodles simple, no color, little shading is helping me a lot improving my sketching skills! I am officially Stealing like an Artist (cit. A. Kleon).

And now let's talk about my new obsession...
Few days ago (August 27th or 28th) YouTube included a video in my "suggested videos" list... the video had a very cool, artistic thumbnail and I watched it...

That's how I fell in the rabbit hole!! :)

My new obsession is BULLET JOURNALING!
I will have a separate page to collect  links to my personal posts and links to the inspiring videos or collections that I see around.

If you don't know what Bullet Journals are, you should read this post:
      http://www.bohoberry.com/bullet-journal/

I actually suggest to just make a google image search and you will be blown away!!! :)

These are the things I like about Bullet Journaling:

      • it's like having a planner, but it is much more flexible. There are hundreds of ways to have a "weekly spread", so why should you be stuck for an entire year with the same format?? Bullet journals allow you to experiment and find what works for you
      • you can have all your "things" in a single place (personal goals, things to track, creative ideas) so it's a great source of motivation and it encourages me to get things done!
      • you can go as crazy creative or as simple as you want. There are several daily challenges and groups that give you prompt to work on, but you can make it your own. And practice make you better! Practicing fancy cursive handwriting and little doodle is SOOOO relaxing.
      • there sooooo many people sharing their work on youtube (or instagram I guess... I don't do instagram) and you can get so many fun ideas to reuse in your own journal. I watched a video in which the guy showing his journal kept saying that he "stole" that design or spread from this or that, but I don't think it's stealing! I love copying a style and readapting to my own aesthetic: that's how we find our voice and how we learn. For example we all have a different handwriting style but we started by copying the alphabet from our teacher over and over and over again, right?? so I don't feel bad about "reusing" what others are doing! As Austin Keon says: "Steal like an Artist"!!

These are just few of my current pages... there are many more pages (which are much more creative), but I will share them probably next month when I have more tips and opinions about the process.

A spread to keep track of what I need send/receive in Sept, a weekly spread dividing personal and crafting activies and a page where I list some of the pages that I may want to add in the future in my bullet journal!

As you can see, the daily activities are not all crossed out, but still I can approach those outstanding tasks on another day and mark them as done. This is MY way of using the journal to make it work for ME :)
Plus I am just practising, on a small notebook, not a real bullet journal because I ordered the Quilter's Planner, and I will be using that as my main planning tool next year... but I want to get better at decorating pages with handwriting and doodles before it arrives!! :)
